Friday’s Keynote Speaker
Beverly Rubik earned her Ph.D. in biophysics in 1979 at the University of California at Berkeley. She is internationally renowned for exploring biofield science and energy medicine. Her main area of focus is research on the subtle energetics of living systems, including the human energy field in health and healing. She has published over 60 papers and 2 books. Dr. Rubik presently serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Alternative & Complementary Medicine, Evidence–Based Integrative Medicine, and Integrative Medicine Insights. She has served on the advisory boards of various groups, including the Program in Integrative Medicine at University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil.
Dr. Rubik was one of 18 Congressionally–appointed members of the Program Advisory Board to the Office of Alternative Medicine at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1992–1997, and chaired the NIH panels on electromagnetic medicine and manual healing. This was the precursory organization to National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Dr. Rubik founded the Institute for Frontier Science (IFS), a nonprofit corporation, in 1996. Laurance S. Rockefeller, Sr., helped support the founding of the IFS. In 2002, IFS was awarded an NIH center grant for frontier medicine research on biofield science in consortium with researchers at the University of Arizona. Dr. Rubik was a project director in this consortium and supervised studies on Reiki, a form of Japanese spiritual healing, and on qigong therapy, a healing practice that originated in China. Dr. Rubik is currently conducting nonprofit research in psychophysiology, measuring higher frequency brain waves from the prefrontal lobe in relation to health and higher states of consciousness.
Beverly Rubik has appeared on numerous television programs throughout the US and worldwide, including a live appearance on the most popular morning television program in the US, “Good Morning America” (ABC-TV), where she presented her findings on the human energy field in December 2000. She serves as a consultant in the health care industry on maverick health and wellness products and as a holistic health practitioner and educator to individual clients.
Saturday’s Keynote Speaker
Jim Oschman is a pioneer in the exploration of the scientific basis for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). He has both the academic credentials and the background in CAM to carry out his explorations. He has published 26 full–length scientific articles in academic journals and 50 articles in CAM journals. In his work, he refers to the same basic science that provides the foundation for modern clinical medicine.
Jim lectures widely on the energetic phenomena taking place in the therapeutic situation. He has developed many scientific insights that can help therapists from every tradition understand and advance their work and explain it to others. His ground–breaking series of articles on “healing energy” published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies were developed into a book, Energy Medicine: the scientific basis, published in the spring of 2000 by Harcourt Brace/Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh. This book is giving the most skeptical academic scientists and medical researchers a theoretical basis for exploring the physiology and biophysics of energy medicines. A second book, Energy Medicine in Therapeutics and Human Performance, was published in the spring of 2003 by Harcourt Health Sciences/Butterworth Heinemann, Oxford.
Jim has degrees in Biophysics and Biology from the University of Pittsburgh. He has worked in major research labs around the world. These include Cambridge University in England, Case–Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, the University of Copenhagen, Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he was on the faculty, and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, where he was a staff scientist. His scientific papers have been published in some of the world’s leading journals. To learn about the theories and practices underlying CAM, Jim has both attended classes and presented workshops at various schools around the world, and experienced a wide range of bodywork techniques. This has brought Jim some distinctions, including acting as President of the New England School of Acupuncture, a Distinguished Service Award from the Rolf Institute, the Founders Award from the National Foundation for Alternative Medicine, and a Career Honor from the Second International Fascia Research Congress held in Amsterdam, October 2009. Jim continues his research and writing in Dover, New Hampshire, where he is President of Nature's Own Research Association. Jim is increasingly being invited to present the concepts emerging from his research to medical professionals at various hospitals and medical centers around the world. He has also become involved in the development and testing of cutting–edge medical devices and other applications of the emerging concepts of energy medicine.
