LENS Conference 2009:
New Approaches and Clinical Decision Making
The sheer number of treatment options available with the LENS can sometimes be daunting. Treatment planning can, at best, take longer considering the many choices and, at worst be confusing.
The clinical decision making process is critical for the client to move through the LENS treatment quickly and efficiently. The LENS Conference this year will focus on developing the LENS Practitioners’ clinical skills through practical exercises, hearing what’s new in the field, and understanding how to use the new tools developed by Len in the clinical setting.
Overview of Conference:
- Keynote speakers who will present:
- Some of the latest findings in the TBI Rehab area.
- The impact nutrition can have on CNS problems along with ways to work in this area.
- Group exercises for honing our clinical decision making capabilities while tapping into the wealth of clinical skills of other experienced LENS providers.
- Training in the use of the NEW Suppression Maps, which address the thorny problem of clients who do not progress or who progress very slowly through the LENS treatment.
- Training in the use of the 2 Channel protocol: Clinical Application.
- Use of the new 2 Channel EEG Report in the Report Generator.
- Using the CNS and Sensitivity/Reactivity Questionnaires in the Report Generator.
- Training in the use of Symptom Ratings, Graphs, and Data in the Report Generator.
- Time in a wonderfully relaxing environment to talk with our friends, other LENS Providers, and sit with keynote speakers over lunch to more deeply integrate the new knowledge they bring to us.
- Integrate the fundamentals of LENS with the advanced topics.
- Enjoy the sumptuous food the Tollhouse Hotel offers.
- Have great fun!

Dr. Hovda is the Director of the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center. He is a former President and current President – Elect of the National Neurotrauma Society and study section committee chair for the National Institute for Neurological Disease and Stroke (NINDS). He is the current chair for the Brain Injury and Neurovascular Pathologies study section for the NINDS and has been elected President of the International Neurotrauma Society (2009-2012). Dr. Hovda has received a number of awards for his research on brain injury and recovery of function, including the 1991 National Head Injury Foundation Award, the Giannini Foundation Award, the Benjamin Franklin Haught Memorial Award and named the Lind Lawrence Eminent Scholar for his work on the topic of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Dr. Hovda is most well known internationally for his translational work on the pathobiology of traumatic brain injury. He has devoted most of his career to understanding the mechanisms of recovery of function. He currently sits on several editorial boards including the journals Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience, The Journal of Neurotrauma, The Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism and Developmental Brain Dysfunction. He is often invited to lecture at other universities and consults for several different national programs including the Department of Defense, addressing issues related to developing therapeutic treatments for traumatic brain injury.
Scientific History
His 1985 doctoral thesis described how amphetamine administration can restore binocular depth perception after damage to the visual cortex. Dr. Hovda was then recruited by UCLA to conduct work looking at the effect that injury to the brain has on development. This work resulted in several discoveries addressing how the young brain can reorganize itself in order to enhance recovery of function after it has been damaged. In 1989, Dr. Hovda was recruited by the Department of Neurosurgery to direct its scientific efforts to understand the cellular pathophysiology of brain injury. This work resulted in providing the backbone for UCLA being recognized as a “Center of Excellence” by the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Hovda is a clear, relaxed, and entertaining speaker who shares a wealth of information based on a solid background of research and clinical experience.
